If Online Guitar Courses Are No Good, Why Do You Have One?

If you’ve spent any time reading my articles, you know I’m not exactly a cheerleader for online guitar courses. I talk a lot about why YouTube rabbit holes don’t work. Why bouncing between random tutorials creates confusion instead of progress. Why most online courses are just video dumps that leave you on your own to figure out what you actually need.

So it’s fair to ask: why does my bio mention an online course?

Because the problem was never the format. It was the method.

Ultimate Rhythm Mastery Course

Most Online Courses Are Just Video Libraries

Here’s what a typical online guitar course looks like: somebody records a bunch of lessons, puts them in order from “easy” to “hard,” and says good luck. Lesson 1, Lesson 2, Lesson 3 — straight line, no looking back.

Or it’s some big name player being interviewed about what they do. Sure, the playing is impressive — but can they break it down to a level everyone can understand? Teaching is an art in and of itself. Most big name players don’t remember what it’s like to struggle as a beginner, let alone how to explain things at a level the average person can actually comprehend.

Or it’s one of those “50 Licks You Must Know If You Like Blues” type courses. Sometimes there are some cool licks in there that are fun to play, but it’s lacking substance — and there’s nothing showing you how to actually apply and integrate it into what you play.

That’s the same problem I see with students who come to me after years of self-teaching. They hit a wall and there’s nobody to tell them why they’re stuck. There’s no one watching what they’re actually doing. There’s no way to adjust. They just stop — and assume they’re not talented enough, when the real issue is that the course wasn’t built to meet them where they are.

I wasn’t going to put my name on something like that.

Why Rhythm?

Rhythm is one of the most overlooked and underpracticed skills among guitar players in general. A lot of videos out there just say “use this strum pattern” and people get stuck there — everything they play starts to sound the same. Those videos don’t show you how to come up with something that fits on your own, how to create variation, or how to understand and transcribe any rhythm you hear.

And rhythm isn’t just about strumming chords. It’s what makes riffs sound good. It’s what makes solos sound good. You need solid rhythm skills to make everything you play sound good.

But here’s the thing — if your timing is off, everything else sounds wrong. You can know all the right notes, all the right scales, all the right chords, and still sound like a beginner if your rhythm isn’t solid. Every guitar player I’ve ever worked with who sounded “off” but couldn’t figure out why — rhythm was the answer almost every time.

I know this because I lived it. When I was learning, rhythm was the thing that gave me the most trouble. I struggled with it for a long time before it finally clicked. That struggle is actually what makes me good at teaching it — I understand where people get stuck because I got stuck in the same places and know how to get past those obstacles.

How the Course Was Built

I recorded every session myself in a six-by-ten section of my basement. The production isn’t fancy. But the course itself was developed with direct input and feedback from my coach and mentor, and from Tommaso Zillio. Both of them are data nerds. My mentor collects data at his live events every year to see what methods get the best results for the majority of students, and he refines his approach constantly based on what the numbers actually show. Tommaso is a scientist by training who A/B tests his teaching methods to figure out what works versus what just sounds good in theory.

So while I’m the one on camera, the thinking behind the course was shaped by people who don’t guess at what works — they measure it.

The course is called Ultimate Rhythm Mastery, and it lives on Tommaso’s site at musictheoryforguitar.com. If you complete it, you’ll have a better understanding of rhythm than you’d get in almost any college course I’ve ever seen or read about. That’s not a throwaway claim — I mean it.

It's Not a Straight Line — It's a Spiral

This is the part that makes it different from most online courses.

Ultimate Rhythm Mastery doesn’t march you through a list of lessons and hope you keep up. The same material gets revisited multiple times — each time from a different angle, or at a slightly more advanced level. You circle back to concepts you’ve already worked on, but now you see them with fresh ears and more skill under your fingers.

This is how learning actually works. You don’t master something the first time you see it. You build understanding in layers — and each pass adds depth that wasn’t possible the first time through. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same “thinking in layers” approach I use with every student I teach in person.

You're Not on Your Own

The other thing that separates this from the typical online course: you have access to live support.

There are weekly live video sessions where you can ask questions, get unstuck, and get feedback in real time. On top of that, students can email me directly — and I regularly send back video responses with specific feedback on what I’m hearing and seeing.

That’s the piece almost every other online course is missing. The ability to say “I’m stuck on this” and have someone who actually teaches for a living look at what you’re doing and tell you what to fix. Not a forum post from another student who’s guessing. An actual diagnosis from someone who’s seen the problem hundreds of times.

Who This Is For

Let me be clear — if you can take lessons with me in person, do that. If you’re anywhere in Northeast Ohio and you can get to my studio, in-person lessons are always going to be the better option. I can watch what you’re doing in real time, catch problems the moment they start, and adjust on the spot. No online course can fully replace that, including mine.

But not everyone has a highly trained teacher in their area. Not everyone lives in a place where quality guitar instruction is available. This course reaches the world — and it gives people access to a methodology that actually works, no matter where they live.

And I’ll be honest — I always get excited when someone signs up from a country where I haven’t had a student before. My student base is truly global at this point, and I love hearing how family members, friends, and bandmates noticed right away a big improvement in their playing and sound. That never gets old.

If you’ve been struggling with rhythm — if your timing feels off, if you can’t play syncopated patterns without falling apart, if everything you play sounds stiff and you don’t know why — this is built for you. And unlike most online courses, you won’t be left alone to figure it out.

The Course Includes a Creative Component Too

This isn’t just about learning to count and play in time. Creativity is woven into the entire course. There are some sessions dedicated specifically to ways to create rhythm variations, but the majority of the course is designed to give you killer rhythm skills while making you more creative at the same time.

Because the goal isn’t just to play rhythms correctly. It’s to make rhythm a tool you can use to come up with your own ideas and develop your own musical voice.
